2. Make Poverty History has agood little section on Drop the Debt.
3. Good information is available on HiPC's (Heavily Indebted Poor Countries) on the DFID site .
4. CAFOD gives details of some of the recipient schemes.
5. The role of G8 is covered on this BBC news item.
6. BBC news item on Tazania's $3bn debt relief.
7. Tanzania used the money for its Primary Education Plan.

Excellent SITE on El Nino

Climate Change

This image has been made available from the Canadian Ice Service to coincide with the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)report released at the beginning of February. The panel released its report on rising temperatures and disappearing ice. This image was used a marketing tool to draw attention to the REPORT. The image suggests that the polar bears shown are trapped on an Iceberg, they are however excellent swimmers. As the ice melts the bears are forced to swim further in search of food and run the risk of drowning. There are 20,000 - 25,000 polar bears worldwide with 60% of these in Canada. For more information go to the WORLD WILDLIFE FUND site where there is a dedicated page on the Polar Bear.

This was achieved using a site called DUMPR. Just upload a photgraph from your computer and it will create a fieldsketch. useful for coursework.

Tsunami

Year 9 are studying the 2004 Tsunami.

Also there is a good ANIMATION of the Tsunami on Wikipedia.

Brussels rent a Bike scheme

Brussels February 2007

The city of Brussels have developed an innovative bicycle rental scheme. ( www.cyclocity.be )

You put a deposit of 150 Euros on a credit card at the information terminals, this provides you with a membership card. The bike then costs 1.50 Euro for a week or any part of week. A user then pays 0.50 Euro for the first half hour then its 1 Euro for each hour after that. All charges are made to the cerdit card. There are a number of "bike stations" around the city and bikes can be taken and returned to any station. The scheme was introduced in December 2006. The website does provide maps and photographs but be warned it is in French and Flemish.

INCONVENIENT TRUTH

I have bought a copy of this film and will show year 13 and 11 before their exams. EVERYONE should see this film, it is alarming and shocking. A PDF booklet is available for DOWNLOAD here. The download supports the film and contains copies of the graphs used in the film.

Below the images is a table of numbers whuich are the back issues of images of the day.You can also SUBSCRIBE to the site so that you receive a FREE email from the earth observatory that provides details of updates to the site but also provides links to a number of images each week.
