Eating the Planet- ECOLOGICAL DEBT

16th April is the date at which Britain goes into Ecological Debt.
The WORLD goes into Ecological debt on the 9th October.

Year 9 will need the CALCULATOR that is here. An alternative simpler version can be downloaded HERE.

The WWF has produced a Living Planet report. This is a large PDF that contains country statistics, graphs and world maps.

The WWF has a good DEFINITION of a Ecological Footprint.

Comparative graphs are available from Footprintnetwork.org., and a series of MAPS, that include footprints over time, Ecological debtors and creditors and a world consumption cartogram.

This is the NOAA site. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it is American but a good source of information. There is a "HOT TOPIC" section that has information on Earthquakes, El Nino, Floods, Hurricanes, Natural Hazards, Tornadoes, Tsunamis and Volcanoes.

The GUARDIAN on Saturday 11th March, had an article on Vulture Funds. A good INTRODUCTION to the topic is here. BBC Newsnight ran a feature on the issue.

This is the TROPICAL STORM RISK site. It is for the Insurance Industry but the HOME page has a map showing where storms are at present. Above the map is a table showing active storms, by clicking on the system name you will be taken to a map of the track and geographical information. You can also sign up for email alerts for storms.

Rich and Poor

These 2 photographs show the contrast between rich and poor areas of a city. The first picture is of Caracas Venezuela. The second photograph is of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The difference between Rich and Poor is stark.

Climate Change

This image has been made available from the Canadian Ice Service to coincide with the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)report released at the beginning of February. The panel released its report on rising temperatures and disappearing ice. This image was used a marketing tool to draw attention to the REPORT. The image suggests that the polar bears shown are trapped on an Iceberg, they are however excellent swimmers. As the ice melts the bears are forced to swim further in search of food and run the risk of drowning. There are 20,000 - 25,000 polar bears worldwide with 60% of these in Canada.
